More to come! Please send us your news, let us know what you're up to, send some photos, darn it.
Webcam and Skype Hookup for the Brunch
We are planning to go technical this time around and have a laptop, webcam and internet connection set-up at the brunch with projector and some speakers. Object? Skype-in some out-of-towners who can't make it.
Those of you out-of-town who have Skype accounts, please email us and let us know if you are keen to conference call in with us, or perhaps just be 'online' in case someone wants to chat.
If you aren't familiar with Skype, it's easily downloadable FREE software allowing you to make free Skype-account to Skype-account phone calls worldwide. No gimmicks. Free. No need to use a credit card to sign up. I personally have had Skype for four years (Tracey here) and have never had a problem with it, nor suffered any virus problems related to it.
Brunch starts at 10:30 but we figure we won't be 'online' til about 11am.
Need Photos for Brunch!!
We would like to put together at Powerpoint slideshow for the Brunch. Does anyone have any digital photos to share? If so, please scoot them our way ASAP. If you need more space, contact us at that email and we'll arrange for FTPing of the photos.
Westerners
We cannot help but observe there are many westerners in our group. We would like to get you in touch with each other so you could have your own gathering. Westerners, send us an email of where you are and we'll put it together for you.

A bit of classmate update
We think she’s calling it ‘work’ but Antonella Rubino is nonetheless jaunting about Italy with students. Those wanting to drop her a note of hello should email us and we'll send you her contact information.
Terri-Ann Didone Passaretti has now been 'found'. She's a stay-at-home mom. She and her husband homeschool their 15 year old daughter who is getting ready for the post-secondary life. Terri-Ann will be at brunch!

Tracey Halford Gregoris) is pleased to report that she finally finished writing that trashy novel she always wanted to write and submitted it to Harlequin with little hope or care if it gets published (liar). At least it's done. Now for skydiving. Or another Harlequin.
Sylvia Brighina is living in Firenze with husband Marco and daughter Stephanie. Sylvia is teaching English and says she would welcome a reunion at her house.
More news on more women to follow next week. Please send us your photos (current or not) and stories (ditto).
Blog Update Friday October 15th - midnight
Look for news about Marisha, Pina, Jayne, Alison, and maybe Tracey (who warned she would talk about herself if others didn't contribute news).
See you at the Fall Brunch. If you are able to attend and haven't sign up yet, please email us ASAP at lorettoabbey85@gmail.com.
Lucianna & Tracey.

Fall Brunch: November 7, 2010
Plans are for Sunday brunch at the Eagle's Nest Golf Club in Maple. Likely cost per person will be $40.00. Alcohol billed separately. We need to know by September 30th if you're in or not. Let us know either way, so that we don't hound you October 1st.
Send us an email and let us know if we'll see you there. And if you need a drive, or can offer one.
In the meantime, it's FALL (almost). Time to think of pumpkin recipes. Anyone else crazy for pumpkin? Or maybe it's just me and my (used to be) red hair. Email us any pumpkin recipes. Cakes, squares, soups. Tried tested and true is best. But we like a challenge too.
And see you all November 7th. More updates as they happen.

Sylvia B. and Me
Left to right, my three year old son John. In red shirt, my husband Dennis. Standing behind the table is Sylvia, and seated to the right is Sylvia's husband Marco.
Did I mention we just moved? Please ignore the complete lack of landscaping. It will be better next year when I host the 26th reunion. Standing room only.

Sue N.
Hanging downstairs in locker area, skipping class to get tickets for concerts and geography with Mrs.P??? (every class was a new adventure)
2. Favourite class(es)
Loved Art and English (Shakespeare)
3. Despised class(es)
Math and French – (thank god I had Louise-she got me thru every French paper!!)
4. Knowing what I know now, I would have studied
Wish I would have learned Spanish and tried harder at French. I also wish that I had known how helpful typing class would be- to be able to type fast and without looking- it’s awesome!! (man she was brutal- but worth it!!)
5. Knowing what I know now, I never would have studied
Don’t’ have those thoughts.
6. Favourite films from your Abbey days.
Sixteen candles, Breakfast club, the Outsiders (just watched them again with my kids1)
7. Favourite TV shows:
Family Ties, the Cosby’s, Dynasty
8. Favourite bands (or at least a song or two).
Depeche Mode, Duran Duran , the Clash- when I hear those songs is sure does bring back a lot of memories.
9. How about a fashion crime story? What do you regret (or miss) from the 80s fashion scene?
Regret- leggings, shoulder pads and big hair!! Miss-nothing.
10. Have you/are you living outside of Toronto? If so, where? And what brought you there?
I live in Toronto (Avenue/Lawrence) and went to Ryerson for Urban and Regional Planning. Worked in both public and private sector till 1992.
11. Who are you hoping to reconnect with? Classmates you are hoping to find in 2010?
I joined Facebook to find some people and succeeded. Hope to see Tara (living in New Brunswick) Louise (Edmonton) Renata, Molly, Maria Brunato. Seeing Marisa Kalu would be a blast!
12. What are you doing these days?
After a few years in planning, I decided I wanted to get into the restaurant business. I partnered with my dad and husband and opened St. Louis Bar and Grill on Yonge, just south of Eglinton. My husband and I bought my dad out about 10 years ago and have expanded the company to 25 franchises in and around Ontario. I stopped working there full time when my daughter Taylor was born. I spend my time shuffling my kids (Jake 14 and Taylor 11) to various lessons (competitive swimming, dancing and karate). I volunteer at both schools and just finished organizing our golf tournament to raise money for an autistic school in Woodbridge (small world-Lucianna’s husband is our Toronto Sun rep).
13. Anything new and exciting to share?
No, just really excited to see everyone and catch-up.
14. Anything dull and boring? Anything mediocre to share?
Absolutely nothing.
15. Are you where you thought you'd be at this point in time?
Yes, I met my husband when I was 23 and knew he was the “one”. We have an amazing marriage and great kids. It’s hard to believe that in 4 years my son will go off and study Marine Biology somewhere other than Ontario and in 7 years, Taylor will be off and we’ll be “empty nesters”. My son has already informed me that this will be his last march break with us- would like to go volunteer in South America.
16. How many checkmarks do you have on your Bucket List?
No list- take each day as it comes!! However, I’d like to get my motorcycle license. My husband is an avid rider and the back sucks!!
17. In ten years time, what will you be doing?
Hopefully attending my kid’s university graduation and traveling around the U.S. in a RV. (or maybe motorcycle if I pass the test!!)
18. Any regrets?
None-had I not chosen this path- I wouldn’t have this wonderful life!!

Monique C.
• LUNCHTIME with Dor, Mar, Gianna…having to ask Dor for money as I was always broke and watching her cut an ice cream sandwich in half (she used to count the holes on top so it would be absolutely fair).
• Going home with Gianna and her Dad (the Big Guy)
• Studying in the library while Gianna worked.
• Going to visit Dor and Marielisa at Yorkdale…they had JOBS!
• Doing plays with drama class.
• Going to Peru with Mrs Ho and gang (Lucianna I have a picture of us in my home, in the living room).
2. Favourite class(es):
LATIN!!!! Sr Angela; history Mrs Farrell (can’t forget her bra straps); Spanish (in which I had never been officially enrolled), biology with Mrs Ho and geography with Mrs Panezutti. Loved Mrs Angelini’s hair!
3. Despised class(es) :
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATHSSSSSSSSSSS (poor Mrs Griffin…with the likes of us. Only thing that made that class bearable was Lisa Di F.
4. Knowing what I know now, I would have studied:
MORE English grammar seeing as that’s what I actually teach Inter Alia (so ironic as I hated English in high school).
More science courses as I’m thinking of going back to uni for a second degree.
5. Knowing what I know now, I never would have studied:
TYPING.
6. Favourite films from your Abbey days.
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (seen about 10 times at Yorkdale theatre with Rosa Mac.); Blade Runner; Breakfast Club
7. Favourite TV shows:
WKRP IN CINCINATTI (absolutely the best); Mork and Mindy; Magnum PR; Dynasty
8. Favourite bands (or at least a song or two).
U2 (all songs…Gianna and I listened to them for hours!) Simple Minds; Erasure, Annie Lennox,The WHO, Led Zeppelin…
9. How about a fashion crime story? What do you regret (or miss) from the 80s fashion scene?
Doreen’s hair…my hair…everyone’s hair! Marielisa’s hair!!!! (strawberry blonde) Shoulder pads! (I look at the pics and that’s all I can see!)
10. Have you/are you living outside of Toronto? If so, where? And what brought you there?
I’m living in Siena (Italy). My husband brought me here but I have always felt like this was my real home. My absolutely wonderful daughter Samuela is 12 years old.
I’m a lecturer at the Uni…ENGLISH…yikes! Politically active , write for a newspaper when I have some free time and now converted to Buddhism (Mahayana).
11. Who are you hoping to reconnect with? Classmates you are hoping to find in 2010?
No particular name comes to mind right now…I’m curious to see everyone and cannot come…but I’m looking forward to the pics that I am sure will be posted somewhere. Actually, Gigi, Nikki Cardone and the Petricone twins come to mind and Lisa Di F and Rosa Mac.
12. What are you doing these days?
Working…exams at uni. Studying, trying not to screw up my daughter’s life too much (putting aside a little money for her eventual therapy). Getting over my separation and not really knowing what to do with all this freedom. Mmmmmm….dilemma.
13. Anything new and exciting to share?
I’ve taken up gardening with a passion and can relate to some plant species.
14. Anything dull and boring? Anything mediocre to share?
NO
15. Are you where you thought you'd be at this point in time?
Well I didn’t think I would be anywhere when I came out of high school. Even now I have no idea where I’m going or what I will be doing in the future.
16. How many check marks do you have on your Bucket List?
It changes as I discover new passions and go through different experiences. Two so far. More to bring to fruition.
17. In ten years time, what will you be doing?
I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope to be in good health, spend more time with my sister and family, be with a man who is right for me and bonk every night of the week (little blue pills help…50% of men over 40 have erection problems), practice massage, be able to tell you that I’ve done the pilgrimage to Compostella.
18. Any regrets?
NO… I wouldn’t be where I am today emotionally and intellectually had I taken another route.
BUT…I do regret not seeing my close friends and miss them. I often think about them and wish to see their families.

Caroline B.
- Skipping last period mass and thinking I was getting away with something
- Science Fair with Adrienne B. and giving my Dad the specs to help us build a wooden sundial! What a hoot! And we made to the finals!
- Religion project with Lorraine G. and finding Beatles lyrics to make up our report
- Does anyone remember that food fight in the Caf? Whoa, was the principal ever mad!
- Natural Family Planning in religion. I always thought it was a good idea. And being so young and naïve when I married my husband we decided to implement it…. Woops! Honeymoon baby! Best thing that happened to us. My eldest is son 19 and my daughter is 15. They’re all grown and I’m still relatively young.
- Deena D’s after-formal party was quite impressive and memorable
2. Favourite class(es)
Math of Finance with Mr. Donovan (what a teddy bear). And what a bird course. Great too because when I took it again in University, they used the same text book!
Calculus. Loved Dr. Kuryian (can’t remember the spelling) and the way she would roll her eyes when we took up those difficult Calculus questions assigned the night before. She would literally start writing the answers on the board before we asked the questions.
C’mon girls!
3. Despised class(es)
Chemistry! Just couldn’t wrap my head around it. Thank God for Susan P. who sat beside me for labs. She was such a genius and sweet girl. She told me she was going to pursue a career as an Actuary. Don’t laugh, but after class I had to look it up in the dictionary!
Typing. Mrs. D. was a typewriter Nazi! Ha! Typewriters. My kids don’t even know what they look like. I bought them a typing CD when they were old enough to use a computer. Now they text their friends on their cell phones faster than I can form a coherent thought.
English. Hated essay writing, until Grade 13 when Mrs. Pratt introduced us to Précis writing. Get to the point writing! Nothing flowery. Black and white. Just like Math!
4. Knowing what I know now, I would have studied
Drama. I liked it and I think I would have been good at it. Everyday is an act! Especially when you’re in business. You know the old adage… “All the world is a stage…” Now I’m old enough to actually understand what that meant!
5. Knowing what I know now, I never would have studied
Nothing different. I think we all gravitate to what we’re good at. I ended up doing what I wanted, courses or not.
6. Favourite films from your Abbey days
Romancing the Stone. I remember dating this Mexican at the time and he took me to see the movie and explained that Corazon meant heart in Spanish. I dumped him after that!
Top Gun, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. How archaic and dated!
7. Favourite TV shows
Didn’t have time for TV.
8. Favourite bands (or at least a song or two)
We lived in such a great time for music. We were sandwiched between classic rock, funk, pop and new wave. Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2, Duran Duran, Police only to name a few and scratch the surface. It was ALL good. No wonder my kids listen to songs from our era. Nothing current tops the diverse music of our time.
9. How about a fashion crime story? What do you regret (or miss) from the 80s fashion scene?
Yes, I have to agree the “Flash Dance” leg warmers were so cool (and warm at the same time).
10. Have you/are you living outside of Toronto? If so, where? And what brought you there?
Is there life outside of Toronto? Love TO. Best city ever. Manhattan is a second for me.
Although I could see myself retiring on the West coast. Victoria in the summer and Mexico in the winter.
11. Who are you hoping to reconnect with? Classmates you are hoping to find in 2010?
Everyone. But I would really love to see Adrienne B., Susan P., and Lorraine G.
12. What are you doing these days?
After leaving my career as Systems Analyst with TD bank in 1999, I took on the bookkeeping for my husband’s business after he bought the shares of his father’s company. About 5 years ago I designed and wrote the content for our company’s website. This has become a great tool for us to catalogue our work and display the numerous referral and “thank you” letters from our clients.
13. Anything new and exciting to share?
We recently purchased a larger building for our business. I moved my home office into the building and have reclaimed a room in my house which I intend to use to expand and renovate my kitchen (Love to cook!) Can’t wait until it’s done.
14. Anything dull and boring? Anything mediocre to share?
No time for boring!
15. Are you where you thought you'd be at this point in time?
Absolutely! Right on schedule.
16. How many checkmarks do you have on your Bucket List?
Quite a few. But my standards are not too high. Went on a Mediterranean cruise last summer with husband and kids. That was pretty awesome. Going to Europe this summer with my husband (Portugal, Venice and Rome).
17. In ten years time, what will you be doing?
Hopefully I will be semi-retired and traveling more with my husband. Hopefully my kids won’t make me a grandmother too soon!
18. Any regrets?
None. Life is too short for regrets.
Memories: Band Trip to Hawaii and Niagara Retreat
The Niagara retreat was over one of the last weekends in our final year and I think was hosted by the religion department. It was held at the Loretto Christian Life Centre, which overlooked the Falls. I remember getting into pillow fights with Sarah C and Karen K so late into the first night that Ms. Ferguson moved us to separate rooms because we were so noisy and won't go to sleep. I remember listening to Pacabel's Canon 100 times over as we learned to meditate and contemplated our futures. I remember that many of the group ventured out at night and went to the wax museums in town. At the end of the weekend, I think we were all in agreement that the retreat was a great way to reflect on the end of one part of our lives and the start of something completely different. Of course, what we imagined then ended up having no bearing on where we are now. :-)
Michelle W.
Ahhhh. Band Trip to Hawaii! Of course I remember March of 1984 (I think we were in Grade 12 but it could have been Grade 13).
We had a BLAST!!! Total sunstroke the first few days for us all and freedom to walk around Wai Ki Ki. It was heaven. I remember Michelle & Karen's eyes popping out of their heads on the beach as a good looking guy strutted back and forth in front of us in a leopard speedo! We overdosed on pineapple and paid for it in the end for sure. It was certainly the trip of a lifetime and a great experience at the Abbey.

Reunion Payment Options
Those attending the reunion on June 18, 2010 have two options: Complete Tea with a glass of wine or sherry, or Tea without a glass of wine or sherry. Costs are $53.00 for the alcohol-embellishment, $43.00 for teetotalers, prices include gratuity and taxes, etc.
Full payment needs to be received by June 4th in order to confirm the booking. Rather than wait for cheques to be mailed, we have arranged for an account to be set-up with TD Canada Trust. Attendees can go into any branch of the TD and make a deposit directly into the account. The receipt will read “Loretto 1985”.
05072—004—834 952 254 62 is the full account number. 05072 is the transit number, 004 is the institution number. Last 11 digits is the account although apparently you need only use 522 5462 (the first four numbers apparently are for internal use only etc etc).
The account name is “Loretto Abbey High School Reunion 1985.” Please make sure the cashier/teller records your name so that we can cross you off the list.
Those doing online banking at the TD can add us as a personal payee, but it may be less trouble to just head straight into the bank.
Please email us when you’ve paid, letting us know how you’ve paid, and for which option.
The email transfer option may not be ready in time for our deadline but will be for future events. Planning is in progress for a Fall 2010 get-together. We take all suggestions!!

Alison C.
There are indeed many – the graduation “5 years are quite enough” song/performance in particular stands out. Abbey dances. Sister Wilfreda dressing up for Hallowe’en – creepy but hilarious at the same time. Mrs. Brudenel in her tennis clothes and full length fur coat. Many fun and happy memories. I really loved going to that school. Junior school too!
2. Favourite class(es):
Science with Mrs. Ho. English, math with Dr. Griffin. Drama with Ms. Madott-McCarvel (spelling?) – truly one quirky lady. She let me write my own barbershop quartet – and performed it! Will never forget that.
3. Despised class(es):
Computer science – I hated those stupid little cards…was not an immense fan of chemistry either (something to do with accidently pipetting some horrid chemical – gross! I ended up repeating the experience in university – but will explain over drinks…)
4. Knowing what I know now, I would have studied:
I would have continued studying art. Who cares that I couldn’t draw? I loved the class. I didn’t think it would help me in university so I didn’t take it beyond grade 11…so sad…
5. Knowing what I know now, I never would have studied:
Nothing. I am glad that I took every class that I took – diversity of knowledge and methods of learning have proven immensely helpful over time.
6. Favourite films from your Abbey days:
Blade Runner – is my absolute favourite movie. All the John Hughes movies…Pink Floyd the Wall (at the Ontario Place huge screen – everybody was stoned but me…quite hysterical…)
7. Favourite TV shows:
Can’t really remember. Didn’t watch a lot of tv. I loved Star Trek (old and new). Dr. Who. Still do!
8. Favourite bands (or at least a song or two):
The Clash; Duran Duran, OMD, Depeche Mode; the Who; Madness; The Jam…
9. How about a fashion crime story? What do you regret (or miss) from the 80s fashion scene?
Oh good lord there are so many – the horrible MC hammer pants; the stupid black rubber bracelets; the leggings under skirts; the plaid shirts worn with a hip belt; the “Rebecca Rankin” hairdo (you know the one short at the back with long bangs– that resulted in hair hanging over your eye – so you went around with one eye functioning or worse flipping your freakin hair all the time…). Bronze lipstick (seriously??)
10. Have you/are you living outside of Toronto? If so, where? And what brought you there?
I live in Aurora Ontario. My hubby and I got married and moved to the burbs… how cliché…
11. Who are you hoping to reconnect with? Classmates you are hoping to find in 2010?
Everyone!! I went off to U of T and didn’t really see anyone again – aside from a few chance encounters. Marisha and I were on the same rowing team at U of T but in different categories; but aside from that I didn’t really see anyone from the Abbey for years… (cue some violins now…)
12. What are you doing these days?
I have two jobs – I am the Senior Manager and Policy advisor on Research Ethics for York University.
I am also a Municipal Councillor for the Town of Aurora. That’s right – I am a politician!! Got elected in 2006…
13. Anything new and exciting to share?
I will tell you in person…
14. Anything dull and boring? Anything mediocre to share?
We were going to sell our house and move back to Toronto but have decided to stay. We’re currently renovating. Once we finish that, we will be purchasing some property way up north and building our own large log cabin near the water.
15. Are you where you thought you'd be at this point in time?
Well, I thought I’d be a mom with four kids and a published author. So nope. But I am in a place that I am quite happy to find myself. I have an interesting career, a great husband, a wide variety of friends, a lovely home. Much to be thankful for. A bout with cancer when I was 23/24 pretty much put all of that in perspective for me.
We are still hopeful about the kids (biological or adopted) and I am hopeful to be published someday soon. Of course, I have to let someone actually READ my work in order to get published. One problem at a time though…
16. How many checkmarks do you have on your Bucket List?
A few. But not as many as I thought I’d have by now. Life has a way of getting in the way…However, I don’t despair:
To use the words of George Eliot, “it’s never too late to be who you might have been…”
17. In ten years time, what will you be doing?
I will be writing full time; have an active mediation practice and be raising at least one little one. Oh, and living part of the year in our fabulous log cabin by the lake…
(yes, you can all visit…)
18. Any regrets?
I regret canceling my trip at the end of high school. I stayed to be with Chris (who was ill again. He passed away in 3rd year). I don’t regret the time I spent with Chris but I never did end up taking the big trip to Europe or South America which I deeply regret.
Hopefully, some day soon…

Angela C.
There are so many to choose from and probably even more than I can even remember at this moment (how does that happen?). To list a few:
- Raising my eyebrow and trying not to laugh as Mr. Boris gives his "don't smile at boys" lecture in Religion class. You know, the ol' cause and effect: smiling at boys leads to holding hands leads to you-know-what!
- Several of us gals trying to pile into Eun's little white bug when she first got her driver's license. Oddly enough, we succeeded!
- Participating in the Talent shows with my BFF, Lisa. Choreographing and performing those "brilliant" dance routines as Burt and Carey, the country bumpkins, and Leroy and Lolita! I can still see Miss Harper and Miss Ferrigan laughing in the front row.
- The Washington, DC trip with concert band, which coincided with my 16th Birthday. Need I say more?
- Lisa D. and Mick Jagger
- Lee and I sneaking up to the piano room before classes started in the mornings.
2. Favourite class(es)
Music class with Miss DeManche and her many floral print dresses (even though I ended up with a Trombone instead of a Flute).
3. Despised class(es)
MATH!
Mrs. Griffith's Grade 10 class, specifically Geometry.
Mr. Greto's class and his "do not memorize pages" speech
After Mr. Donovan's Grade 11 class and Logarithms, I quit!
4. Knowing what I know now, I would have studied
Art! I would have also taken part in the Drama Club.
5. Knowing what I know now, I never would have studied
Chemistry. Why torture yourself? Just let it happen naturally!
6. Favourite films from your Abbey days.
St. Elmo's Fire, Mask
7. Favourite TV shows:
Knots Landing, The Love Boat
8. Favourite bands (or at least a song or two).
Once I discovered U2, I never looked back! Adam Ant, Eurythmics, Culture Club, Triumph, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles (even though they don't fit into the 80's category).
9. How about a fashion crime story? What do you regret (or miss) from the 80s fashion scene?
Leg Warmers - both regret and miss!
I made this multi-coloured, striped mini skirt in Home Ec class. I wore it to an Adam Ant concert, along with sheer white stockings and black, ankle moon boots. I was soooooooooo cool....NOT!
10. Have you/are you living outside of Toronto? If so, where? And what brought you there?
I live in British Columbia. I lived in Victoria, on the Island, for 12 years but am currently in Armstrong, in the Okanagan Valley. My wonderful hubby is why I am here.
11. Who are you hoping to reconnect with? Classmates you are hoping to find in 2010?
Wow, everyone really. I do occasionally chat with a few on FB (Emma, Rosemary, Irma). My BFF from the Abbey days, still is.....hi Lee! I would like to reconnect with Eun K.L., Denise R., Michelle C., Lisa D., Sue S., Antonella R.
12. What are you doing these days?
Enjoying life. Currently staying at home (which my dog loves). Have worked in Daycare for 12 years and as an Office Administrator.
13. Anything new and exciting to share?
Planning a trip to Greece, about to celebrate my one year anniversary with the love of my life, contemplating self-employment and, oh, did you hear there is a 25th High School Reunion coming up????
14. Anything dull and boring? Anything mediocre to share?
Always days like this, so nothing to say about that.
15. Are you where you thought you'd be at this point in time?
I was NEVER one of those gals in High School who knew who they were and what they wanted to be and persued it (not to say I wasn't ambitious!). I sort of went with the flow and followed my path in life as it revealed itself. I am happy where I am right now.
16. How many checkmarks do you have on your Bucket List?
There are a few, but I am revising my Bucket List.
17. In ten years time, what will you be doing?
Living life to its fullest and being happy, I hope!
18. Any regrets?
Not keeping in touch with some people, but on the whole, no.

Marisha R.
Lots and lots but some random ones that still make me smile stand out at the moment:
#1 Along with Adrienne and the Susans and others, stowing my school bag in the bushes outside the middle doors at the end of lunch period and then making a break for it when the bell rang for last-period mass. What were they thinking? I guess they caught on because I remember that they changed the mass time so that it was no longer last period and I got to see Father what's-his-name set his vestments on fire (OK they only got scorched but fire sounds more exciting).
#2 Lunch on the back lawn in the spring with our socks rolled down and skirts pulled up.
#3 Almost the last day of class in Grade 13 Chemistry when Mrs. Nemethy finally became human. Instead of boring us with the periodic table, she told us about how she (at 8 months' pregnant) and her husband escaped from Hungary on bikes, taking only what they had on their backs. I remember holding my breath when she started talking because it was one of those important moments and I recognized it as it was happening. I don't know why she decided to share but I remember her in her tweed suit and Margaret Thatcher hairdo as clear as yesterday. I was actually sad to realize that I would not likely see her again.
#4 Again near to the last day of class, I think the Grad Tea in the convent section when we got the "if you feel the calling" speech. If one person had started giggling I don't think anything could have stopped us. I/We were so ready to get out into the real world.
#5 Singing our grad class song: "Five Years are Quite Enough" at the school assembly. I think it was penned by Tracy Riley and I assume others.
#6 My Mrs. Pratt loses it on me moment. I was late for her Grade 13 "30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary" class and she sent me down to the office to get an admit slip from Sister Vice Principal whom I can't remember and who did not know me (because I never got in trouble or at least was never caught). I told the sister my name. She gave me the slip. I brought it up and Mrs. Pratt loses it on me and accuses me of posing as someone else to avoid a detention blah blah blah. I looked at the slip and the sister had written "Nora Shiroman". The sister and I had a good laugh about it.
#7 The construction guy's Audi getting nailed in the convent parking lot by someone's chip shot in grade 11 gym. It was not me. I don't think. I don't remember too much more golf after that, thank goodness.
#8 Sister Wilfreda dressed up as the security guard at our last dance at the school. She walked around with a flashlight making sure there was enough space between the couples.
2. Favourite class(es)
Latin with Sister Wilfreda because she was such an oddball. You could not make up a character like her. History with Mrs. Elliott. Gym class, of course.
3. Despised class(es)
Mrs.Griffin's Grade 11 "What's the froof?" math class. Mr. Greto's (can't remember the name but it was something like that) grade 10 math class - he was a brutal mumbler. Grade 11 computer science with those Fortran cards.
4. Knowing what I know now, I would have studied Typing. I still read the keyboard.
Art. Life is too short not to play.
5. Knowing what I know now, I never would have studied
Can't think of anything that did not help me. Even Religion class - I still get a lot of miles out of my stories about those classes.
6. Favourite films from your Abbey days.
I gained the reputation for dragging my friends to see weird movies. I remember apologizing for several years for dragging Tracy and someone else to see "The Wicked Lady" with Faye Dunaway. My favourites were "Back to the Future", anything by John Hughes, anything with Mel Gibson in it.
7. Favourite TV shows:
Miami Vice. I seem to remember that this was the decade of the evening soaps and mini-series. I never got into those. My father had a business with satellite dishes so we had one. I watched a lot of MTV and HBO and Showtime movies. That was probably where I got my taste for offbeat films.
8. Favourite bands (or at least a song or two).
Duran Duran, INXS, REM, U2, Simple Minds, Roxy Music - their videos got a lot of play on MTV.
9. How about a fashion crime story? What do you regret (or miss) from the 80s fashion scene?
Isn't it all coming back into style now? Someone should ask Bronwyn Cosgrave about it.
I remember back-combed, teased bangs. Not a great look for me.
10. Have you/are you living outside of Toronto? If so, where? And what brought you there?
I am still here - stayed in Sydney, Australia for 4 months after undergrad then spent a year in Ottawa before law school. It seems that I will see the world 2 weeks at a time.
11. Who are you hoping to reconnect with? Classmates you are hoping to find in 2010?
Plenty - I don't remember all the names. It would be fun to have a chuckle again with Rosa Montem., Rosa Mac., Tracy Ri., Susan Pos., Susan Shor., Margaret Cor., Sandra Cim., Antonella Rubi., Ina, Michelle Ken. (OK I seem to be remembering the other "trees" in the class), Rosemary Coe., Mary Wak., Gigi Roc.. I have run into classmates here and there over the years. My funniest encounter was Cathy Simps. bursting through my bathroom cubicle door at Lee's Palace at least 20 years ago. I was "busy" and she nailed me in the head with the door, but she needed to get on stage to perform with the band. It's a funny story to me. I hope she is not offended if she reads this.
12. What are you doing these days?
I am a lawyer with the regulator for lawyers and paralegals in Ontario. I work in the Equity Initiatives Department developing policies and programs to enhance access and retention of Aboriginal peoples and members of other equality-seeking communities in the profession. I enjoy it a lot more than tax and estates, which I practiced for 6 years before getting into the not-for-profit sector.
13. Anything new and exciting to share?
Not really. I have come to accept that "Life is unfolding as it should." (Thank you Sister Elizabeth for the Desiderata). I am a very fortunate person in that I have a close circle of great friends, a guy in my life who makes me laugh and also loves being active, a job I enjoy, sports that I play at in my spare-time, my two arms and two legs and all my other working parts. I lost my mom two years ago and it was confirmation for me that you need to take responsibility for your own happiness.
14. Anything dull and boring? Anything mediocre to share?
Oops. See paragraph above.
15. Are you where you thought you'd be at this point in time?
Who are you asking? Sixteen-year old Marisha? 30-year old Marisha? I think I am probably a lot happier than I thought I'd be at 43. I can't get over how old it sounds to me. I was riding my bike to work this morning in the sunshine along the lake path and then along Queen West and I felt pretty good about things, especially after I got a big smile from the Rastafarian at Queen and Bathurst. I feel good most days. And yes my bliss is chemical-free.
16. How many checkmarks do you have on your Life's To Do List?
If this means how many things do I still want to do/accomplish then there are a few. Finish that screenplay (so far, I am great with the ideas but not the typing part). Retire to Italy - no wait, Renata's got that one locked down. Work abroad for a year doing relief or advocacy work. Keep traveling. Learn how to surf. Race the Molokai. Do a back-country ski trip in the Rockies. Race a single at the Head of the Charles. Go the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in Albuquerque. Do an art class, like in Provence or Tuscany, anywhere they start opening the wine at 1pm..
17. In ten years time, what will you be doing?
I hope to still be doing the things I love doing now - work, sports, spending time with the important people in my life. Having a place outside the city for weekends sounds good. I just can't seem to pick the one place.
18. Any regrets?
Based on what I have written so far, I hope you don't think I sound smug when I say no.
So now that I have completed this survey, when do I start getting my matches? Don't tell my boyfriend but I think that one guy who is hooked up with the store owner in the E-Harmony commercials is pretty cute.

Save the Date: June 18 2010
While realizing that some of you can't make this date, we also realize that no date will be perfect. Once we have a solid email list going, likely by next week, we can survey all of you and see if we might all want to get together again in the fall.
Please keep a look out for friends, even those who didn't necessarily graduate with us, but attended for a few years. We want to find as many of our classmates as possible!
